Job Description

POSITION:           Skilled Electrician

 DEPARTMENT:  Facilities & Operations/H.V.A.C., Mechanical, and Electrical

 WORK ENVIRONMENT OR CONDITIONS:  In this position there is a danger of electric shock.  Incumbent may encounter asbestos containing material during the performance of typical or routine duties.  These risks are controlled through proper training and equipment.  This position is required to work both inside and outside in all weather conditions.

 REPORTS TO:    H.V.A.C., Mechanical and Electrical Superintendent

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:  This position is responsible for installation, maintenance and repairs to interior and exterior electrical systems and equipment according to standard practice of trade in compliance with electrical codes and safety code regulations.


  •  Responds to requests for repairs campus wide, including broken appliances, indoor and outdoor light failure, etc.
  • Installs and maintains building communication systems.
  • Works in conjunction with other Skilled Trades to complete rebuilding, remodeling, and repair work.
  • Assists in the modernization of electrical system.
  • Sets up and takes down outdoor lighting, power sources, etc. for special events and programs.
  • Responsible for the cleanliness of shop area and work sites.
  • Estimates time and materials for cost effective completion of projects.
  • Installs electrical wiring, lighting, connects motors, installs electrical controls.
  • The incumbent may work with other electricians or maintenance workers to complete an assigned task.
  • In some cases, the incumbent may work with other skilled crafts such as Carpenters, Plumbers, or Painters.
  • Where additional manpower is required the incumbent may be assisted by Trades Helpers.
  • The incumbent must be able to effectively communicate with various personnel.
  • Runs conduit, pulls wire, and installs circuits for electrically driven units.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs a wide variety and large volume of electrical motors, generators, fans, and lamps.
  • Performs a variety of electrical work incidental to the installation of air conditioning, refrigeration, and other processes, working in collaboration with other trades personnel.
  • Performs related work as required by supervisor.
  • Requisitions material and maintains inventories.
  • Develops plans, specification, and estimated costs on repair, alterations, and construction projects.
  • Works with and coordinates the tasks of other electricians and lesser skilled mechanics.
  • Inspects work upon completion and sees that requests have been satisfied and the work area left in proper condition.
  • Incumbent must be able to work without direct supervision to meet electrical needs and to safely install new circuits and wiring.
  • Must be aware of proper procedures to use when encountering suspected asbestos containing material to avoid personal exposure, contamination of job site, and exposure of facility occupants to asbestos.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  •  High school diploma or GED.
  • Four years experience as electrician or electrical systems repairman.
  • Possess a Journeyman or Master Electrical license.
  • Knowledge of the safe use of tools and equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license with satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to work under emergency conditions and trouble shoot causes of failure in equipment or systems to make repairs.
  • Knowledge of electrical codes.
  • Ability to obtain Asbestos Abatement Certificate.
