Job Description

POSITION:           Skilled Mechanic

 DEPARTMENT:  Physical Plant: Skilled Trades

 WORK ENVIRONMENT OR CONDITIONS:  Risks associated with this position include, exposure to dust, paint, fumes and loud noise. Incumbent may encounter asbestos containing material during the performance of typical or routine duties.  These risks are safeguarded through proper training and use of proper equipment.

 REPORTS TO:    Superintendent, Building Maintenance, HVAC & Elec. Services

 BASIC FUNCTION RESPONSIBILITY:  This position performs general duties associated with a variety of skilled trades.


 May estimate time, labor and material required to complete a job.

  • Works in conjunction with other skilled and unskilled tradespersons to complete assigned tasks as requested.
  • Responsible for transporting necessary tools and equipment to the job site.
  • Maintains a clean working environment and cleans up job site after work is completed.
  • Responsible for the ordering, monitoring and maintain inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Performs general repairs of windows and hardware.
  • Performs general repairs of door hardware and lockers.
  • Performs general repairs and/or installation of various wall and window treatments such as white boards, blinds, etc.
  • Repairs and/or replaces soap, paper towel, and toilet tissue dispensers as necessary.
  • Performs light plumbing duties; unplugs drains, repairs and/or replaces faucets/toilets/etc. assists skilled license staff.
  • Performs general repairs of walls, windows, floors and doors; patches, sands and paints.
  • Performs general carpentry repairs.
  • Must have knowledge of carpentry equipment, table saws, miter saw, planer, band saws, joiner and drills.
  • Must be aware of proper procedures to use when encountering suspected asbestos and lead paint containing material to avoid personal exposure, contamination of job site, and exposure of facility occupants to asbestos.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Four years of experience in general repairs of buildings with specialization in at least one skilled trade.
  • Knowledge of the safe operation of tools and equipment. Re: carpentry equipment, table saws, miter saw, planer, band saws, joiner and drills.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • State license or journeyman card preferred.
