We are looking for an amazing individual to fill our Full Time Kitchen Manager role in our Call Sam Kitchen at our Detroit Veterans Housing Program located in Detroit, Michigan!  This role is on-site and offers a competitive pay rate of $40,000 - $45,000 annually as well as medical, dental and vision insurance along with other fringe benefits such as 3 weeks of Paid Time Off (PTO) a year, 7 paid holidays, company match on your 403b retirement contributions, AND MORE!  If you are:

Job Description


The Kitchen Manager, Volunteers of America-Michigan (VOAMI) is an at-will position that reports directly to the Program Manager. This position will be responsible for the supervisory and operational oversight of the Call Sam kitchen in Detroit. This role will also provide primary support for all kitchen services and activities.


  • Daily oversight of commercial licensed operational kitchen serving 3 meals daily 365 days a year
  • Oversee the food preparation and cooking process, often providing hands on support
  • Supervise and train kitchen staff and community volunteers
  • Ensure safety and sanitation standards in all operations
  • Manage donations, creating donor bases from local restaurants and community programs (i.e., Forgotten Harvest, Gleaners and Gordon Food Service)
  • Order materials, supplies, and ingredients based on need
  • Oversee the weekly menus and monitor inventor levels donations accordingly (FIFO)
  • Schedule work shifts for employees
  • Store all food products in compliance with health and safety regulations
  • Maintain a safe and healthy environment for clients and employees
  • Ensure that the kitchen budget is aligned with projected monthly, quarterly, and annual budgets.
  • Other duties as assigned by the program manager


  • Maintain regular communication with the program manager regarding daily operations in the kitchen
  • Maintain compliance with VOA Michigan policies and procedures
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

  • In-depth knowledge of kitchen health and safety regulations.
  • Ability to work flexible schedule including weekends and holidays
  • Excellent problem-solving and conflict management abilities.
  • Outstanding communication and organizational skills.


  • Associates Degree in Culinary Arts or high school degree/GED, plus three to five years experience in restaurant/catering/community kitchen food management.
  • Possess ServSafe Food Manager Certification or ability to obtain within the first 90 days of employment

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this job. While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, stoop, reach, lift, push, pull, taste, smell, talk, see, hear, read and speak English and drive. The vision requirement includes close and distant vision. Occasionally required to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds. Environmental Working Requirements:

Work is done in either an on-site or remote office environment with exposure to computer screens. Assignments may require work to be done on an individual basis or in teams with members at various staffing levels. The work environment, at times, may subject staff to behavioral and medical events that could be physically hazardous.

Other Requirements:

  • The ability to work various shifts and irregular hours to meet agency's needs; Attendance on scheduled shifts and participation in mandatory meetings and trainings. Must maintain a valid Michigan drivers license and driving record that satisfies insurability requirements
