Under general supervision, prepares and implements specific sections of a planning project within the county or a specific community. Analyzes defined planning issues and develops specific related goals and objectives. Assists in designing and implementing planning projects and strategies, and monitoring and evaluating them. Applies methodologies to planning and special projects specifically relating to legal requirements and practices for implementation. As assigned performs research and analysis on new and emerging techniques for land use control and change management. Prepares impact analyses for basic submitted land use proposals and issues, master plan elements and other special studies. Assists in the preparation of economic, demographic, transportation, land use, and housing studies for county and sub-area planning purposes. Participates as a presenter at project related meetings. Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.
Within Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Planning monitors and evaluates planning projects to determine how GIS can be used as a decision making tool. Links informational databases to mapped information for planning projects. Tests, debugs and evaluates GIS related software to manage planning related data sets and the performance of data quality assurance and quality control. Develops digital file formats and visual displays to allow end users better support for decision making and analysis. Uses GIS computer aided design technology to produce planning related information. Participates as a presenter at project related meetings. Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.
Within downtown/commercial redevelopment assists in the creation of a redevelopment work program for county urban commercial areas. Works closely with other county staff to deliver Main Street revitalization services to Oakland County communities. Provides on-site technical assistance to local community Main Street programs as assigned. Promotes the Main Street Oakland County program through media contacts, conferences and presentations. Prepares and presents project related information to local officials, business owners and residents. Attends trade shows and events focused on the commercial/retail urban redevelopment. Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.
Within Environmental Stewardship, assists in the coordination of a Countywide program to conserve the natural environment. Works closely with other county staff to support the planning of an interconnected system of green infrastructure, evaluates needs and tailors a sustainability program. Prepares and presents project related information to local officials, business owners and residents. Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.
May be required to work an adjusted schedule involving evening hours and/or weekends to attend municipal Boards and related project meetings or activities.

1. Possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Urban Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Geography or a related field.
2. Have had at least one (1) year of full-time progressively responsible work experience in city, county or regional planning, private consulting planning, Geographic Information Systems, or other closely related professional planning experience.
WITHIN DOWNTOWN/COMMERCIAL REDEVELOPMENT
1. Possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Urban Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Business Administration, Public Administration, Economics, or a related field.
2. Have had at least one (1) year of full-time progressively responsible work experience in city, county or regional planning, private consulting planning, downtown development, real estate development, economic development, or other closely related professional experience.
WITHIN ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
1. Possess a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Urban Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Geography, Resource Management, Ecology or a related field.
2. Have had at least one (1) year of full-time, progressively responsible work experience in city, county or regional planning, private consulting planning, or other closely related professional planning experience.
WITHIN ALL AREAS NOTE: A Master's Degree in one of the above fields listed in number 1 above for each function may be substituted for the work experience listed in number 2 above for each function.
3. Must maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license. Out of Country driver’s license holders will be required to obtain the appropriate valid State of Michigan driver’s license before the hire date.
4. Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical, established for this classification.
5. Successfully complete the six month probationary period.
