Job Description

SUMMARY

The process lab technicians play a vital role in the success of our company; they are essential as the machines manufactured are reliant on the process being successful. The primary function of the process lab technician is focused on the development of induction processes. This entails operating production type machinery in pursuit of obtaining a satisfactory heat treat process for customer parts. In addition, the technician will be responsible for verifying conformance through means of metallurgical analysis. Utilizing a variety of metallurgical equipment the technician will collect the data, and construct a conclusive report depicting the information and its conformance when applicable.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES 

Following established methods and procedures must be able to perform, but not limited to, the following:

  • Setup and operate induction hardening and tempering machines to obtain desired heat treat results.
  • Conduct routine microscopic examinations of metals and alloys to determine their microstructure, and other metallurgical characteristics.
  • Polish or etch metal specimens and photographs accordingly
  • Examine metal and alloy samples with magnetic-flux equipment to detect fractures, impurities, and similar defects in metals.
  • Measure surface and subsurface hardness using Macro-hardness, and Micro-hardness testers.
  • Create customer reports utilizing Microsoft word and excel.
  • Evaluate customer prints and/or heat treat specifications, identifying conformance accordingly.
  • Regular lifting 1-20 pounds.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, occasionally.
  • Some travel required.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Associate degree (A. A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school (focus in metallurgy preferred); or at least 5 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
