LEAD MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN (FULL-TIME)

Starting Rate of Pay: $35.56/hr.

Pay Range ($35.56/hr. to start - $38.75/hr. after 12 Months)

Canton Township is made up of 36 square miles of area and has a population of nearly 100,000 people. There are 36 Township owned buildings and structures, with over 150 mechanical units. Township HVAC systems range from residential units all the way up to 100 ton dehumidification units located at our community fitness center. Experience with installation and repairs of HVAC systems is required to perform this position successfully. The preferred candidate must have leadership experience with the willingness to coach and mentor other Facility Maintenance staff members.

Requirements:

  • Possession of a current, valid heating and air conditioning, mechanical contractor, or related license from the State of Michigan is required. Candidates will be required to provide a copy of their current certificate prior to the written test.
  • Must possess a current, valid Michigan Drivers License with a driving history that does not create liability concerns; which includes, but is not limited to, convictions for reckless driving, careless driving, suspended license, or convictions involving drinking and impaired driving.
  • Due to having unescorted access to the Public Safety Department. This position requires Public Safety Clearance.

JOB DESCRIPTION - LEAD MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

This is a lead worker position, responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of Township facilities. In this capacity the employee is responsible for performing a variety of technical and manual building maintenance activities while acting as a lead worker over a group of employees performing technical and routine maintenance tasks. The employee will be responsible for seeing that assigned labor tasks are performed properly and efficiently by others. The employee participates in the performance of tasks assigned to subordinates, but is not responsible for management/personnel decisions. The employee is responsible for working directly with outside contractors on specific building maintenance and service contracts. An employee in this class performs a variety of services and tasks necessary for the proper maintenance of all Township owned buildings. The Lead Maintenance Technician is responsible for insuring that the mechanical, ventilation, heating, cooling, electrical and plumbing systems for all of the Township's buildings and facilities are operating efficiently, properly and safely. The employee performs and directs various cleaning, maintenance and repair activities necessary for the proper maintenance of Township buildings. The employee develops his own work methods and procedures subject to direction and review from the Departmental Manager.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Note: These examples are intended merely as illustrations of the various types of work performed.)

  • Oversees facilities maintenance personnel, delegates daily assignments when necessary and monitors the work performed.
  • Oversees repairs and improvements to Township buildings performed by outside contractors.
  • Acts as a liaison between contract maintenance firms and the Township.
  • Performs a variety of maintenance tasks on heating and air conditioning systems.
  • Makes minor carpentry, electrical and plumbing repairs, repairs and replaces windows, redecorates rooms, and performs other similar maintenance functions as assigned.
  • Procures building maintenance supplies such as, but not limited to, heating and cooling system supplies, filters, tools and miscellaneous supplies.
  • Keeps records of building maintenance schedules, expenditures, supply requisitions and work request orders.
  • Maintains a file of all municipal maintenance and repair schedules.
  • Responds to the requests of Township staff such as, but not limited to, assisting with wall hangings, installing shelves, assisting with the rearrangement of office furniture and other custodial, janitorial, and HVAC duties.
  • Performs miscellaneous tasks to maintain the proper appearance and safety of Township buildings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS - KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods and practices involved in installing, maintaining, operating and repair of heating and refrigeration equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, blueprints, and pertinent codes.
  • Working knowledge of electrical, carpentry and plumbing repairs.
  • Ability and skill in the operation of power tools and machinery.
  • Substantial mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to climb over obstacles, climb through openings, and crawl in confined areas.
  • Ability to walk and/or stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to distinguish color and perceive shapes.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders.
  • Ability to keep records and make reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • A minimum of five years experience as a heating and refrigeration maintenance specialist.
  • Some experience performing minor carpentry, plumbing and electrical maintenance and repairs.
  • Graduation from a standard high school or trade school or its equivalent, supplemented by specialized training in heating and refrigeration or any combination of experience and raining which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills.
