In order to create an encouraging learning environment for students while their regular Teacher is absent, the Substitute Teacher will need to effectively manage and/or instruct the class from roll call through to tidying up the classroom after the students have left.
Some of the Substitute Teacher’s duties and responsibilities include:
- Follow lesson plans provided by the regular Teacher to create a cohesive and consistent learning experience for students
- Manage the classroom effectively to encourage student participation, minimize distractions and maintain a positive learning environment
- Adapt teaching methods to fit the needs of each individual student
- Supervise students in and out of the classroom, including in the halls, on the playground, and in the cafeteria
- Provide in-class and at-home assignments based on the available lesson plan
- For long-term substitutes: develop lesson plans and assignments consistent with the regular teacher’s past lesson plans

- Plan, prepare, and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning
- Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment
- Use relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction
- Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures
- Provide appropriate feedback on student-submitted work
- Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use the information to adjust teaching strategies
- Maintain accurate records to document student performance, including attendance, grades, and behavior
- Communicate with SIC and school director regarding students with three or more absences
- Participate in department, school, district, and parent meetings
- Establish and communicate clear daily objectives for all learning activities
- Integrate technology into teaching and professional activities
- Collaborate with grade level team members on curriculum and student needs
- Design, implement, and evaluate service learning projects
- Prepare required testing reports on students and activities
- Encourage parent and community involvement, obtain information for parents when requested, promptly return phone calls, and answer emails.
- Participate in appropriate and approved professional development
- Have 60 credit hours from an accredited school or university
