Job Description

Job Purpose

The Controls Engineering – Electric Powertrain is responsible for the company’s powertrain platform control algorithms, software development and embedded electromechanical firmware. 

Job Duties

Controls Engineer will ensure the reliability and robustness of the powertrain controls while working with various cross-functional teams (mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, systems technicians) to develop the algorithms and software. They will conduct control design reviews to ensure high product quality.

Additionally, the Controls Engineer works closely with the rest of the Engineering and Product Development departments to develop new products/features and to continually increase existing product power and efficiency. Assures powertrain quality by designing testing methods, checklist and other protocols for controls testing, HIL and vehicle testing. Finally, the Controls Engineer will help design and confirm the fabrication, assembly, and installation processes.

The Controls Engineer will enable the Zeronox Electric Powertrain Platform with an agile electronic powertrain solution which can work on all current and future OEM collaborations.

Required Skill/Abilities

  • Experience integrating real-time safety-critical control algorithms and embedded control software
  • Ability to pair across battery, battery management systems, motors and motor controllers for purpose-built applications.
  • Deep knowledge of systems theory and control systems design and its application in battery, vehicle, and electromechanical systems
  • Experience implementing embedded safety-critical systems under processes defined by ISO26262, DO-178, or other functional safety standards 
  • Experience developing software using modern embedded C++
  • Experience with software engineering processes and tools such as Git, CI/CD, unit testing, and familiarity with command line
  • Understanding of real-time operating systems and the execution of code in a real-time embedded context
  • Familiarity with embedded communication protocols: Ethernet, CAN, LIN, UART, SPI
  • Familiarity with working with microcontrollers and computers at the register level 
  • Familiarity with electronic components, electrical calculations, and reading electrical schematics and datasheets
  • Familiarity with using electrical lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, and electronic loads
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Eager to learn and acquire new skills, new capabilities and to be a team player with a growth mindset.
  • Knowledge of powertrain control and electrical vehicle battery systems and how to diagnose issues, improve efficiency and increase power. Experience with high-voltage battery systems.
  • Hands on, creative mindset with experience in advanced automotive propulsion system development.
  • Job knowledge, production planning, quality focus and general consulting skills are important as well.
  • Superior computer skills, with experience in 3D design tools and simulation software

Education and Experience

  • Bachelors’ degree in mechanical engineering, Master’s degree highly preferred.
  • 5-10 years’ experience working in the mechanical engineering field and/or electric vehicle/electric powertrain field.

Working Conditions

  • Prolonged sitting and working on a computer and other engineering design equipment.
  • Occasional lifting up to 30 pounds.
  • Must have manual dexterity in order to assemble products and use tools.
