Summary:

The Lead Hybrid & IndyCar Electrical Systems Engineer will lead all IndyCar Hybrid engineering efforts with respect to Ilmor Engineering, Inc.’s involvement in the IndyCar Hybrid program. Additionally, lead all Ilmor Engineering, Inc. IndyCar electrical systems development and testing including dyno support and racecar & engine systems support as required.

Essential Job Functions (Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities):

Hybrid Systems – Work in collaboration with Ilmor partners on all aspects of the Hybrid’s design, development, build, and operation.  This will include:

  • Base development and prove-out to ensure the proposed Hybrid solution is capable of meeting defined parameters for track deployment.
  • Management of the production Hybrid’s operation spanning from pre-event calibration to post-event analysis for continual improvement. 
  • Analyze data from dyno and track activity to establish reliability and performance issues, usage trends and opportunities for performance improvement and optimization.
  • Liaise with race teams and GM Motorsport to create simulation models and performance studies to optimize deployment and regeneration strategies.
  • Ilmor Engineering, Inc. primary software liaison with Ilmor and IndyCar partners.
  • Ilmor Engineering, Inc. primary calibration engineer for all Hybrid related software.
  • Life cycle management to include a performance and reliability tracking program for the duration of the Hybrid program.

Dynamometer Testing – Support Hybrid running on dynos at Ilmor Inc and GM Motorsport 

  • Generate test plans to verify key Hybrid performance and reliability targets.
  • Generate test plans for deploy and regen strategies.

Electrical Systems – Responsible for all electrical and communications systems on the current IndyCar racecar.  This will include:

  • Monitor and resolve electrical issues as they arise on the chassis and dyno. Generate fault reports as required and proactively investigate issues on and off car working closely with the Trackside staff and Ilmor partners.
  • Responsible for liaising with Ilmor UK on any chassis electrical issues and facilitating resolution of any problems.
  • Maintain CAN specification between ECU and all associated units on the vehicle or dyno.

Miscellaneous Electrical Engineering – As workload permits, assist Ilmor Marine Engineering and non-IndyCar racing programs with electrical engineering work.

Travel - This position will require travel to track tests at various times throughout the year to verify Hybrid performance and operational targets are being met.  May also require additional travel to further the aims of the IndyCar Hybrid program, facilitate new Hybrid installations and assist race team engine startups.

Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required, Electrical Engineering preferred
    • Highly proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite
    • Excellent communication skills
