Job Description

We are currently searching for a dynamic, Research & Development Mechanical Engineer to support the development, validation, documentation, and support of new mechanical products by utilizing mechanical engineering principles and practices.

In this role, you will conduct various research, design, and support tasks, in the development of new products for the robotics painting market. Each project will vary in size and complexity, but all will require attention to detail. You will be responsible for the mechanical design of robotic linkages, including the selection of drives and various other peripheral components, while understanding how these elements impact product performance, reliability, and cost.

In addition to new product research and development assignments, you will also need to champion any challenges that arise with current products and installations. You will collaborate cross-functionally with research and development staff, operations, sales, execution, suppliers, and, in some cases, the end customer.

Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Select, size, and package mechanical components
  • Develop component and assembly designs, using Solid Edge and Solidworks CAD software
  • Update, modify, and release drawings, using Solid Edge and Solidworks CAD software
  • Define and implement required analysis for mechanical design problems
  • Troubleshoot and investigate customer issues involving mechanical robot hardware, but also interdisciplinary problems related to robot motion, electrical, and fluid flow hardware
  • Review and rationalize commercial component options for a design
  • Design castings, weldments, drive components, and various other machined parts
  • Utilize dimensions and tolerances, including GD&T, to define fits and manufacturing instructions for new and existing components
  • Resolve design feedback from customers, suppliers, and the robot factory, implementing changes as necessary
  • Estimate the duration and labor cost to complete a proposed design
  • Develop simple project schedules
  • Release components and BOM’s in the Oracle ERP system
  • Develop and execute paint product validation and performance tests
  • Work in interdepartmental teams to concurrently create new robotic painting systems
  • Create technical procedures and content for product documentation

Ideal candidate will have the following experience and education:

  • High School Diploma or GED Required
  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related field or related experience
  • Preferred related experience in machine design and analysis
  • Preferred 1+ year industry experience with 3D CAD (i.e. Solid Edge, Solidworks, etc.)
  • Ability to read and analyze engineering drawings
  • Basic aptitude for mechanisms
  • Ability to use or willingness to learn Ansys and Mathcad
  • Ability to use or willingness to learn basic communication tools, including Excel, Word, Outlook, Project, and PowerPoint
  • Willingness to learn operation and programing of FANUC robots
